Ward Information

Ward councillors, ward committees, and how residents participate in local government at ward level.

Ngwathe Local Municipality is divided into wards, each represented in Council by a directly elected ward councillor. The ward is the primary point of contact between residents and the municipality: service complaints, development priorities and community concerns are raised through the ward councillor and the ward committee.

Your Ward Councillor

A ward councillor represents the interests of the residents of that ward in Council, reports back to the community on Council decisions, and chairs the ward committee. Use the directory below to find the councillor for your ward and their contact details.

Ward Committees

Sections 72 to 78 of the Municipal Structures Act provide for a ward committee in each ward. The ward councillor chairs the committee, which may have up to ten further members drawn from the community, elected in a manner that seeks to represent a diversity of interests and the equitable representation of women.

What a Ward Committee Does

  • Serves as a formal communication channel between the community and the Council.
  • Makes recommendations to the ward councillor and, through the councillor, to Council on any matter affecting the ward.
  • Assists in identifying ward priorities for the Integrated Development Plan and the budget.
  • Supports community participation in municipal processes such as the IDP and budget consultations.

Ward Boundaries

Ward boundaries are determined by the Municipal Demarcation Board and are used by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to allocate voting districts. Residents who are unsure which ward they fall in can confirm it against their voter registration details or by contacting the municipal offices.
